How to Backup Capita SIMS Using the Attix5 Plugin

Attix5 Pro Server Edition can be integrated with Capita SIMS to automate backups and send these to the Backup Vault Storage Platform.

Installation

The SIMS plugin needs to be installed using the Plugin Installer – details of how to install plugins can be found in the following video:

https://www.backupvault.co.uk/kb/article/how-to-install-attix5-plugins.html

Install the SIMS plugin as pictured:

When installed, launch the Server Edition client. Open the Tools menu and then Plugins.

You now have several SIMS options to choose from.

SIMS consists of three components.

  • SIMS
  • FMS
  • Discover

Only installed components will be visible in the menus, so if Discover is not installed, it will not be available to configure for backup.

SIMS Configuration

Click on SIMS Backup to open the SIMS Backup Settings dialog.

Tick the Backup SIMS SQL Server box to enable SIMS Backup. It is also recommended to backup the master database using the Include Master Database tickbox.

Enter the username and password of an SQL user able to run backups in the SQL Username and SQL Password fields. In our example, the SQL user is sa.

Enter the SIMS Database Name. This is the name of the SQL database running SIMS, and is SIMS by default.

If you are unsure of any database names, SQL Management Studio can be used to confirm these.

Enter the Server Name. This may be the hostname where the SIMS Database can be found, or may be the host and SQL instance name depending on your configuration. In our example, this is just ACMESIMS but could be ACMESIMS\SQLEXPRESS or similar.

Enter the path to Backup to. This is where backup data will be written out to by the SQL Server. Make sure that the service user for the SQL Server is able to write to this location. In our example, the default location is used which is C:\Program Files\Attix5 Pro\Backup Client SE\SIMSBackup\.

The default SQL Server service user is NETWORK SERVICE and this user has been granted full access to the SIMSBACKUP subdirectory.

Enter the DBAttach path. DBAttach.exe is used by SIMS in conjunction with the SQL Server to create database backups. You may need to specify an alternate path to the executable if it cannot be found in the default location.

Tick the Backup SIMS Shared Directory and Backup SIMS Document Management Server tickboxes to include these for backup. You should also specify the folder locations for these if they are different from the defaults.

Click OK to confirm and save the settings.

FMS Configuration

Click on FMS Backup to open the FMS Backup Settings dialog.

Tick the Backup FMS SQL Server box to enable FMS backup.

Enter the SQL Username and SQL Password for an SQL user who is able to run backups of the FMS database.

Enter the Database Name for the FMS database. By default this is FMS.

Enter the Server Name where the FMS database can be found. As with the SIMS database, this could be just the hostname, or may be the hostname and SQL instance name together.

Choose the path to Backup to. Also as with the SIMS database, this should be a path that the SQL Server service has full access to.

Choose the DBAttach path. You may need to specify an alternate path to the executable if it cannot be found in the default location.

Click OK to confirm and save the settings.

Discover Configuration

Click on Discover Backup to open the Discover Backup Settings dialog.

Tick the Backup Discover SQL Server box to enable Discover backup.

Enter the SQL Username and SQL Password for an SQL user who is able to run backups of the Discover database.

Enter the Database Name for the Discover database. By default this is Discover.

Enter the Server Name where the Discover database can be found. As with the SIMS database, this could be just the hostname, or may be the hostname and SQL instance name together.

Choose the path to Backup to. Also as with the SIMS database, this should be a path that the SQL Server service has full access to.

Choose the Discover.Backup.Console path. Similarly to DBAttach, this application works in conjunction with SQL Server to create database backups. You may need to specify an alternate path to the executable if it cannot be found in the default location.

Click OK to confirm and save the settings.

When configuration has been completed, the backup can be run manually or will run as scheduled.
