How to Setup Email Notifications
Email notifications can be used to inform you of backup success or failure directly to your email account.
If you have only a few servers, this may be preferable to Storage Platform reports as emails are sent immediately when the backup finishes, whether the backup is successful or not.
Note: Storage Platform Reports are all schedule driven, meaning that you will have to wait until the report is scheduled to run to be notified or would have to run these manually.
Go to Tools, Plugins and Email Notification Plugin.
In the Email Notification settings menu, you can set the subject for backup success and failure. You can also tick the following checkboxes to change settings:
- “Use email notification” to enable or disable if email should be sent.
- “Notify me after a successful backup” to send email on backup success.
- “Notify me when a backup fails” to send email on backup failure.
- “Append the subject line with the following options and message” to add additional detail to the subject line.
- “Attach files” to add backup log files, their summaries, or a backup selection report to the email.
Under Mail Settings you should enter:
The recipient in the “To” field, which can be more than one email address if separated by semi-colons.
Eg “email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org”
The sender’s email address should go in the “From” field. Note that this should be a valid email address for the mail server you are sending from. If you are using Gmail, Office365 or another hosted service, make sure this is your account’s email address.
The SMTP server should be the IP address of hostname of your email server.
The default SMTP port is 25 and does not need to be specified. If an alternate port is required enter IP or Hostname:portnumber.
For example: “smtp.yourdomain.com:465”
To use TLS or SSL check “STARTTLS”.
If authentication is required, tick “My SMTP server requires authentication”.
Enter your username and password in the “User name” and “Password” fields.
Note that authentication does not necessarily require the STARTTLS setting.
When all settings are entered, you can click the test button to send a test email and confirm that the configuration is correct.
Click OK to confirm the settings. Email will be sent when the next backup runs using your configured settings.
The Email Notification Plugin can be configured to use online mail services in addition to local SMTP servers.
At the time of writing, the defaults for some of these are listed below.
