How to install BackupVault Pro on Windows via command line

Introduction

The ESE Agent MSI can be installed silently in the background without any user intervention. This is useful for environments without a typical user interface available.

Before you begin, ensure you have the latest MSI file. This can be found on our downloads page. Alternatively, you can deploy an installer from the Management Console.

Warning: If you deploy the MSI yourself, ensure it does not have anything in the account name or group fields.

Configuration

This method uses MsiExec, a Windows installation tool that gives you full control of the install process.

The usual form of the msiexec command line is this:

msiexec.exe <install_option> <path_to_package> [package_parameters]

All the standard MSI parameters are also available. A few examples are:

  • /quiet – Quiet mode, no user interaction
  • /passive – Unattended mode, progress bar only
  • /help – Help information
  • /i – normal installation
  • /a – administrative install

A full list can be seen by running “msiexec /?” in the command prompt (or by going here).

The install process takes parameters and uses them to configure you installation. For example:

msiexec /a “BackupClient.msi” PREPACCOUNT=YES SERVERIP=myserverip ACCOUNTNAME= myaccountname GROUP=”mygroup\\mygroup” CREATEKEY=mycreatekey ACCOUNTPASSWORD=mypassword ACCOUNTKEY=mykey /passive /quiet

You can customise your installation by adding or removing parameters as listed below. These will override the default settings configured:

  • SERVERIP – IP address of the AccountServer
  • ACCOUNTNAME – Account name
  • ACCOUNTPASSWORD – Account password
  • GROUP – Group name
  • CREATEKEY – Group create key
  • ACCOUNTKEY – encryption key

How to Install

  1. Open a command prompt and navigate to the location of your Agent MSI.
  2. Run: msiexec /a “BackupClient.msi” PREPACCOUNT=YES SERVERIP=myserverip ACCOUNTNAME= myaccountname GROUP=”mygroup\\mygroup” CREATEKEY=mycreatekey ACCOUNTPASSWORD=mypassword ACCOUNTKEY=mykey /passive /quiet

The Agent will be installed and an Account with the details specified will be created on the Storage Platform.

Tip: To output logging from the MSI installer, add the /L switch to the command (*=All logs messages, V=verbose):
/L*V <OUTPUT-LOG-NAME>
Example: msiexec /a “BackupClient.msi” PREPACCOUNT=YES SERVERIP=myserverip ACCOUNTNAME= myaccountname GROUP=”mygroup\\mygroup” CREATEKEY=mycreatekey ACCOUNTPASSWORD=mypassword ACCOUNTKEY=mykey /passive /quiet /L*V installer.log
